Soundcheck: Advanced Radio Techniques and Perspectives for Women in Asia and the Pacific

Soundcheck, which was held from 3 to 8 June 2002 at Bahay ni Isis, in Quezon City, Philippines, was opened to women broadcasters who met the following criteria:

1. Women broadcasters doing women’s radio programs;
2. Have some basic knowledge of technical side of broadcasting (recording, editing);
3. Have the willingness, ability, and plan to share their skills;
4. Come from community radio, mainstream /government stations, educational institutions; civil-society organisations or are block timers, independent producers from the said sectors;
5. Able to communicate in English;
6. Have basic computer skills.

Sixteen participants from eight countries, Cambodia, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka, attended the training. Three of the participants came from community radio stations, seven from non-government organisations (NGOs), two from private commercial stations, two from private non-commercial stations,, and two from government organisations.

The training was designed in two tracks: Digital Radio Production (Track One), and Setting up, Management, and Marketing of women’s Programmes (Track Two) with common sessions on the significance of radio to social movements, an overview of radio technology and equipment, Net Radio and Streaming techniques, gender-sensitive radio programming and other issues concerning women and media. At the latter part of the training, the tracks merged and regrouped to create the final output: women’s radio productions, which were assessed after a live test Webcast and polished and streamed over the Net again on the final day of the training.
