Before an audience of 200, a presidium of 6 women judges and 6 strong women witnesses, Ms. Irene Fernandez the head of the presidium and awardee of the 2005 Alternative Nobel Prize read the verdict of the Asia-Pacific Women’s Tribunal Against the World Trade Organization (WTO) as GUILTY of numerous crimes on rural women at 3:30 pm on December 16, 2005 at the Boy’s and Girl’s Club Auditorium in Wanchai, Hong Kong.

The statement of WTO's director, Pascal Lamy at the opening of the Ministerial Meeting here in Hong Kong, that the WTO needs to build a better image is obliquely an admission of its failure to improve the lives of the people of the world as it had promised to do. But women from Asia Pacific gathered for the people's actions against this global trade regime don't need such a statement to prove their suffering. What differs is the degree of devastation depending on how early their national governments have entered into WTO.

The Trade Campaign leads Focus on the Global South's work in the area of international trade. It mounts campaigns against the continuing efforts at trade liberalization promoted by neo-liberal institutions and governments. The main target of the campaign has been the World Trade Organization (WTO) and has been sucessful in its initial goal of derailing the 5th WTO ministerial in Cancun.

A Critical Look at The WTO Policies

As the men in black suits gather today inside the cloistered Hong Kong convention centre to discuss deals on how to protect their businesses and those of the transnational corporations, we, women from the Asian region join the thousands of people who are out on the streets to march in protest against the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

The World Trade Organization (WTO) is the only global international organization dealing with the rules of trade between nations. At its heart are the WTO agreements, negotiated and signed by the bulk of the world’s trading nations and ratified in their parliaments. The goal is to help producers of goods and services, exporters, and importers conduct their business.
