The WSIS secretariat has released an opinion survey at the WSIS official website.

The survey is designed to provide the Summit secretariat with a general understanding of the way in which people view the various elements of the global information society (IS). The inputs will also help the secretariat to develop strategic communication plans throughout the WSIS process.

The survey is composed of three basic fields with several subsections, which would essentially gather data about a participant's background, general opinions and personal experiences with ICTs.

The survey also wants to get opinions on issues such as the definition of information society, the importance of WSIS proposed themes, the ranking of several IS barriers, and the appropriate solutions for developing and transient economies.

The survey will also help the Secretariat assess the forthcoming participants and their knowledge about certain ICT issues. However, because of its easy accessibility over the Internet, the survey data could easily be falsified, leading to wide margins of error in their assessment. It would be best for participants to share their opinions by downloading the file, filling out the form and sending it via airmail to the WSIS secretariat for safer handling.

Also, the results of the survey--as with all other surveys--should not be seen as a barometer to measure the capabilities and levels of understanding of participants. It could help and enhance actions, but not dictate them.

The WSIS Opinion Survey is available at: http://www.itu.int/osg/spu/wsis-themes/survey/index.html.

The downloadable file (in MS Word format) is available on the same site.
