9th International Women’s Human Rights (IWHR)
The 9th annual International Women’s Human Rights (IWHR) will be held in Quezon City, Philippines from May 7-12, 2007. The course examines the use of international human rights instruments from both gender and Asian perspectives. It is designed for educators, NGO workers, technical staff of legislators, and mid-level public servants from national agencies who seek to deepen their understanding of women’s human rights issues and challenges and endeavour to work on the practical application of human rights instruments in their respective professions.
This year's areas of study include: (1) General Overview of the Codification of Human Rights in International Law, (2) National and International Standards on Human Rights, (3) Specific Concerns of International Agreements and Domestic Legislation and Legal System, and (4) Linking Emerging International Trade Laws and Market-based Development Paradigms to the Work of Women’s Human Rights.
1st Summer Institute on Migration (SIM)
Miriam College’s newly launched Migration Studies and Research Program will hold its first Summer Institute on Migration (SIM), on May 21-26, 2007 in Quezon City, Philippines. The course aims to provide a critical overview of the migration process, dynamics, issues, and challenges. Among the featured topics of the course include: (1) Migration, Globalisation, Development; (2) Gender Analysis of Migration and Research; (3) Human Rights and Migration Law; (4) Social and Cultural Diasporic Analysis; (5) Economic Dimensions of Migration; and (6) Migration Processes, Structure, and Programs.
The Women And Gender Institute (WAGI) is Miriam College’s specialised centre for advocacy on women’s issues, gender equality, and non-sexist education. It offers a cross-discipline perspective on women’s empowerment that is interlinked with democracy, human rights, governance, and value formation. It promotes critical analyses and leadership among young women and students through curricular, research, training, and technical support.
