(Presentation by Isis International at the Panel Session on Rural Women – Poverty – Crises – Rights, UN CSW 56, New York, 2012)

lalen_speech_povertyOver the 38 years of our existence, we at Isis International have participated in a number of CSW meetings and countless other UN sponsored events. In this time so much has changed and yet so much has not. The existence and work of the CSW has served to surface human rights violations often hidden, has given a human face to the harsh statistics of mal-development, has created and implemented a structure to address the multi-dimensional aspects of human development. Indeed, the status of women is now put on the political, social and economic agendas of governments, it is allotted resources for the actualization of such agendas, and the process is increasingly consultative, participatory, and inclusive of women.

The Women Human Rights Defenders International Coalition (WHRD IC) is a resource and advocacy network for the protection and support of women human rights defenders (WHRDs) worldwide. Coming at a time when WHRDs have received little attention in the human rights arena, the Global Report on the Situation of WHRDs plays a crucial part in advancing the recognition of WHRDs.

Well, here we are back in a particularly mild weathered New York City - anticipating the first event of many at the Commission on the Status of Women 56th Sessions. Once again women from around the globe gathered to celebrate the gains, advocate for positive change and highlight the gaps in global policy for women. The NGO CSW Forum is an event with many women juggling time constraints, getting passes, buying local sim cards, trying to find their way around on the subway/bus system, just arriving late the night before so sleep deprived, or coming straight from the airport.

Isis International will be participating in the following workshops and panels. To those of you who may be at the CSW and NGO Forum, we hope to see you at the following events.

PlightRuralWomenThese talking points are based on the outcome of the National Consultation on Agrarian Single Women: Distress, Access to Livelihood, Services, India, which brought together a range of intellectuals, academicians, social and grassroots activists along with rural single women and widows of rural India. The consultation addressed issues related to the agrarian crisis and farmer suicides in a most comprehensive way and also discussed the multiple crises and the extremely challenging circumstances that single rural women face with total despair. Further, the consultation also focused on deprivations within the family and institutional discrimination in basic services, deliverables and schemes that are faced by poor rural widows and single women.
