The following statement is in direct response to the assassination of Sushmita Banerjee by Taliban-affiliated militants on 4th September, 2013. As you may know, the killing of Banerjee follows an alarming increase in targeted assassinations and attempts on the lives of women’s rights activists and women in prominent positions, as well as a general escalation of violence against women in Afghanistan.
The wording and demands in the statement have been drafted with input from our partners in Afghanistan. We ask that you consider endorsing this Joint statement on the assassination of Sushmita Banerjee, and the alarming increase in VAW in Afghanistan by sending an e-mail to This email address is being protected from spambots. New York, NY, September 18, 2013 — At the moment when world leaders gather in New York to review development agendas and plan for the coming decades, a group of grassroots and feminist organizations, networks and social movements from different backgrounds and contexts will share their visions and proposals for a just world, where all are able to live with freedom from fear and want. The People’s General Assembly on Development Justice (People’s GA) will be the venue for people from the global south and the global north to challenge governments to address the needs of the world’s 99%, the ones who earn the least, yet bear the costs of excessive consumption and greed.

To commemorate this important day, the Global Network of Women Peascebuilders (GNWP) is launching “Women Speak Out for Peace: A Global Media Campaign.” This wide-reaching campaign would start on September 16th and continue until Peace Day, September 21st. This is a great opportunity for us to raise awareness and knowledge of UNSCR 1325, 1820, and the supporting Women, Peace and Security (WPS) resolutions globally. We encourage you to be creative and utilize available resources in order for all of us to meet the objectives and enhance the impact of this campaign.
